You know the comfort zone. It's familiar. The comfort zone is safe. There are not challenges within our comfort zones. I'll take it one step further and say that it is human nature to revert back to our comfort zones when life gets difficult. Uncomfortable. It's easy to go back to past relationships when the present is difficult. Maybe even lonely. It's easy to go back to old behaviors. It's what we know.
I was out for a jog yesterday after work, when the Lord started to speak to me about comfort zones. You see, i'm a walker. Not really a runner. Not even really a jogger. Love my walks. But yesterday i felt like picking up the pace and really expending some energy. So i started out on my usual path around my neighborhood. I walk/run the same path most of the time. Comfort zone. But then i really felt like God was telling me to run beyond the confines of my neighborhood. My first thought was....uhh. But i don't want to cross a busy street in 5PM traffic. I was dreading running in place for what would probably be several minutes until the street would clear enough for me to cross it. As i approached the usually extremely busy road....nothing. No cars. None in sight. Not one. Odd. Then i continued running into another neighborhood that i had never ventured into and saw some of the most beautiful trees, flowers, homes....winding roads. And i thought--thank you. I would have missed this if i'd stayed on my comfortable path.
So why do i tell you about this little running adventure of mine? Because i think it's completely relevant to our lives. To my life. When we stay on the comfortable path, we hardly even look up anymore. We could go the path in our sleep. But when the Lord tells us to step out and follow Him. Trust Him. He clears the path. (no cars.) He shows us the beauty around us that we would have otherwise missed. So we have a choice. Stay in our comfort zones and miss the adventure. Miss some blessings. Miss some opportunities. Miss personal growth. Miss staying in the present. Or. Step out in faith. Believe that He is going to clear the path if it is His Will.
I'm completely 100% guilty of staying in my comfort zone MOST of the time. But i will not condemn myself nor anyone else for living in the comfort zone. I will, however, encourage you to take a step out. Do something different. Get a different result. Life is too short to stay stuck in the comfortable. What is waiting for you on the other side of your comfort zone?
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1
